Practitioner level

The professional version, ready for Monday morning

Live online cohorts for accountants, lawyers, financial advisers, bankers, brokers and fintech builders. No background in Islamic finance is needed, but the pace assumes you know your own profession: everything is built for use with your clients, your employer or your own books.

Course 1 · The flagship

Foundations of Islamic Finance & Contracts

Six weeks, from why Islamic finance exists to how a halal mortgage actually executes in Australia. The partnership and lease structures are mapped to the AAOIFI Shari'ah Standards, and the course ends with a capstone case your team presents live, for feedback from the faculty and the Shariah board.

  1. The WorldviewWhy Islamic finance exists (maqasid, rizq, wealth as trust) and the map of the industry globally and in Australia.
  2. The Prohibitions in PracticeRiba, gharar and maysir: why they exist economically and where they hide in modern products (compounding debt, speculation, conventional insurance).
  3. Sale-Based StructuresMurabaha and credit sales, tawarruq, salam and istisna'a, and where each fits: home finance, trade finance, construction.
  4. Partnership & Lease StructuresMusharaka (including diminishing musharaka, the standard halal-mortgage engine), mudaraba, ijara including forward lease, and wakala, mapped to the AAOIFI Shari'ah Standards series.
  5. Australia in PracticeWho offers what locally, the regulator's view (ASIC and APRA), tax treatment questions, and how a halal mortgage actually executes step by step.
  6. Capstone Case ClinicThe capstone, where teams take one real scenario end to end, seen through their profession (accountant: tax and audit; lawyer: drafting; adviser: client advice), and present it live for feedback from the faculty and the Shariah board.

How the cohort works

The same rhythm every week

  1. Pre-read

A one-page read, about 10 minutes, before the session.

  2. Live session

Two hours in the evening: teaching, breakouts by profession, and Q&A.

  3. Worksheet

Put the week to work with your own clients, your employer or your own books.

  4. Recording

The session recording, up within 24 hours, so a missed week is never lost.

Rulings are screened. Anything that needs a Shariah ruling goes through CIEA's Shariah board before the session, the same discipline as every Academy Q&A.

After the cohort

A certificate, and a way up

The certificate

Finish all six weeks of Foundations and present the capstone case, and you earn the CIEA Practitioner Certificate.

CPD hours

CPD hours are mapped to each session. Formal recognition is a separate step with each professional body, and each has its own procedure.

Then specialise

Certificate holders can go on to the four Specialist electives, at the Practitioner alumni price of $795 an elective.
